Vases
In the 16th century, the Medici family of Rome resurrected this perfectly shaped vase, with its flattened conical base and goblet-like opening, which since the first century B.C. had been modelled on the new Attic vases and which had been manufactured in Greece four centuries previously. Marble, lead, cast iron, sandstone and terracotta have been used in its production, and it is adorned with ribbed patterns, meanders, garlands, female sphinxes, mythological or military scenes and is generally known as a 'Medici Vase'.
